Prometrium (generic: progesterone micronized) is an oral medication that is prescribed when natural levels of the hormone progesterone have declined due to aging, irregular periods, or surgical interventions such as the removal of the uterus. Micronized progesterone most closely mimics the natural form of the hormone produced by the body. There are several causes of low progesterone, including anovulation (the ovary doesn’t release an egg), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), excess levels of cortisol (the stress hormone), hypothyroidism, hyperprolactinemia, or low levels of cholesterol. The most common cause is the passage into perimenopause, which is when female hormone levels start to generally decline. Dosage The dosage was determined by the prescribing doctor based on medical conditions and response to therapy. It should only be altered by consulting a healthcare professional. Recommended dosing is once a day, at bedtime – unless suggested otherwise by a healthcare provider.

It can restore the normal cycle. Progesterone is also used in combination with estrogen as part of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to reduce menopause symptoms, such as hot flashes, night sweats, discomfort during sex, and feelings of loss of self. Progesterone is added to estrogen in hormone replacement therapy in order to reduce the risk of cancer of the uterus.
