Premarin Vaginal Cream is a cream that boosts estrogen levels, to help reduce vaginal symptoms of menopause.
Premarin Vaginal Cream (generic name: conjugated estrogens vaginal cream) delivers hormone replacement therapy that can help reduce the adverse effects of declining estrogen levels, especially after menopause. It is applied directly inside the vagina to treat dryness, irritation or burning, and painful intercourse. It can also be prescribed to reduce the development of postmenopausal osteoporosis. When treating only vaginal symptoms of menopause, applying supplementary estrogen in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) via a vaginal cream is generally considered safer than oral, injected or topical skin medications that carry a greater risk of side effects due to excess estrogen being absorbed. Premarin Vaginal Cream can also be prescribed to alleviate the risk of menopausal osteoporosis. Premarin Vaginal Cream is a member of the class of drugs known as estrogen derivatives, which contain conjugated estrogens and provide the hormone replacement required in HRT. It works by supplying the estrogen hormones that have been reduced in menopausal women. It will alleviate both the symptoms associated with the changes in and around the vagina, and will supplement the overall estrogen levels to prevent osteoporosis. As published by the independent organization Women’s Health Concern, it has been established that “it remains the most effective solution for the relief of menopausal symptoms and is also effective for the prevention of osteoporosis. It may, in certain age groups, protect against heart disease.” Special benefits of Premarin Vaginal Cream Premarin cream delivers multiple benefits. Firstly, the cream directly soothes the affected areas around the vagina that have become irritated, dry or inflamed due to the fall in levels of estrogen. As well, it is delivering supplemental estrogen to alleviate the causes of these symptoms, as well as to prevent the onset of osteoporosis. Dosage The dosage is based on each patient’s medical condition and response to the treatment. The dosage the doctor prescribes should be carefully followed. Do not alter the frequency or strength without consulting a healthcare professional. Take care to follow the instructions for applying the cream as supplied in the patient leaflet. If a dose is missed, only make it up if there is at least twelve hours before the next dose. Do not double dose to make up a missed dose. Overdosage with estrogens may cause nausea and vomiting, breast discomfort, fluid retention, bloating or vaginal bleeding. Interactions with other drugs Tell the doctor if you are using non-prescription preparations (especially a herbal preparation such as St. John’s wort [Hypericum perforatum].) Refrain from eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while using this medicine. This fruit can increase the risk of side effects. Lifestyle advice Avoid consumption of alcohol during the period of application, as it may increase the risk of side effects. Premarin Vaginal Cream is not recommended for use in pregnant women as it may cause fetal abnormalities. As well, because the drug can pass into breast milk, it is not recommended for breastfeeding mothers. When taking blood tests, inform the doctor that you are taking Premarin Vaginal Cream, as the medicine may affect some test results.
